Why Do Under Age Driving Lessons At Dunsfold Aerodrome With GDI Driving School?

Safety: We GDI Driving School believe that having learnt the basic skills on under age driving lessons, (even off road) young people have a better understanding of vehicle capabilities which improves their awareness of road safety. We are all road users whether we are drivers, cyclists or pedestrians and if our road awareness is raised then we are less likely to cause or be involved in accidents on the road.

Efficiency: Because all of the control skills are learnt in an off road environment during under age driving lessons with virtually no other traffic to negotiate the learner picks up these essential skills very quickly. If doing this specific course they will also learn the basic road skills and therefore when they come to take driving lessons they can save many more hours tuition than they spent on the off road site.

Effectiveness: At this age people are more receptive to learning new skills as well as not having bad road habits already embedded. Off road under age driving lessons are an ideal start towards safe driving. We have had a new learner who had no previous driving experience who took under age driving lessons then shortly after followed it with an intensive course when she was 17 and passed her driving test with only 2 minor faults recorded just 10 days after her 17th birthday.

Cost: The DSA estimate the average cost for learners to pass the driving test today to be £1,500. As shown by the example above, the number of hours of driving lessons needed can be vastly reduced if the learner already has basic vehicle and road skills from the under age lessons therefore reducing the overall cost of getting a driving licence by a substantial amount.

A driving tutorial initiative, which aims at giving 14-17 year olds a taste of life behind the wheel in a controlled environment, has been proven to reduce road accidents by half. Recent studies claim that nearly 4 in 10 motorists crash before they are 23 years old while drivers under 25 are involved in a quarter of crashes that result in a serious or fatal injury. However, under 17s who have taken under age driving lessons are involved in 50% fewer accidents, six months after passing their test, according to Kim Stanton who started the programme three years ago.

They say it may take the dyslexic or dyspraxia pupil longer to learn to drive, and they may need more than one attempt to pass the practical test it is NOT always the case with GDI Driving School. The key is to use multi sensory learning and to ensure that new information or skills are heavily embedded. For example, if someone has poor visual memory, then use their auditory or tactile memory to compensate. They are likely to need lots of reinforcement to embed learning from the short term memory but most dyslexic people have excellent long term memories so they need to be able to make use of this.
